Bicycles at HGSE

Bicycle Basics

Proper Storage

All bikes on the HGSE campus should be properly stored in a designated bike rack location.

  • Do not lock bikes to hand rails, buildings, benches, trees, parking meters, trash receptacles fire hydrants or light poles.
  • Any bicycles parked illegally will be issued a warning.
  • Per the City of Cambridge, locking bicycles to a street sign is permitted, but never in the path of pedestrians or in a way that blocks handicap access.
    • Cyclists need to leave at least 36 inches of an obstruction free path for pedestrians.

Safety

For the safety of others, bicycles obstructing a pedestrian path, building egress or obstructing handicap access will be removed immediately.

  • Removed bicycles will be stored with the HGSE Operations Department for a maximum of two weeks.
  • To retrieve a removed bicycle, contact HGSE Security at (617) 495-3499.
  • Any bicycles not claimed after two weeks will be donated to charity.
  • Bicycles should not be stored in the same place for more than 72 hours.

Best Practices

  • Per the City of Cambridge, bicycling on the sidewalk is not permitted.
  • Cyclists should lock their bike using a U-lock, chain, or cable.
  • Lock the frame and one wheel to the bike rack. If a U-lock is used to lock the front wheel and the frame to the rack, loop a cable through the back wheel and lock it to the U-lock.
  • Harvard University bicycle benefits can be found on the HU Transportation site.
  • Staff and students are strongly encouraged to register bikes with the HU Police Department to aid in the recovery of stolen or lost bikes.
